Tibet, with its vast landscapes from the verdant forest to the arid dry moonscapes, huddled in the rain shadow behind the mass range of the northern Himalaya, certainly makes this land as mysterious as it was for centuries

"amidst perfect tranquility, high valleys, world's highest monastery in the high Himalayan mountains"

It still retains the feel of the medieval period and a tinge of Shangri-la. Located with pride at an average altitude of over 3000 meter, today mankind's enthusiasm and curiosity has flung open the "Mighty doors" to experience the lifestyle, culture and landscape of this "Virgin Land". A journey of a life time, at the roof of the world, with exciting adventure enroute, crossing over passes, of over 5000meter, stunning picturesque scenery of the landscape, rural villages, people, monasteries and breathe taking views of range of snow capped mountains from Mt.Everest, Cho-Oyu, Shisa-pangma to over 6000 meters peaks. Our trip from Tingri onwards is one of the magnificent drive passing through traditional Tibetan villages and nomads camps with constant views of the close snow capped peaks, as we head towards Everest Base Camp via Pangla-pass at 5,200m and Rongbuk Monastery. Journey continues to the highest monastery at Rongbuk through the large village, high passes, nomads camps and valleys with the ever present vista of the snow capped mountain before reaching our highest camp at Everest Base Camp at 5,200m, where we have ample time to explore around to its glacier and magnificent view of the nearby peaks including the northern face of Mt. Detail Itinerary

Day 01: Fly from KATHMANDU to LHASA (3,650M)
Approximately 1 hr 10 minutes scenic flight over the high Himalayan range, arrive Gongor Airport meet our Tibetan representative with 2 hrs drive to Lhasa. Afternoon visit the Barkhor Market near the Jorkhang Temple premises the hub of Lhasa.

Day 02-3: In LHASA
Guided tour in Lhasa IN LHASA, you will be engrossed with sightseeing and excursions of the POTALA PALACE, NORBULINGKHA PALACE, SERA or DREPUNG MONASTERY. Tour the fabled City of Lhasa. A completely forbidden City until very recent times, Lhasa was Holy Grail for many central Asian explorers of past generations. The City has of course been altered by the Chinese occupation and the impact of foreign visitors. However much of the original character remains and whilst jostling through the Potala with crowds of ethnic Tibetans, it is hard not to be captivated by this magnificent civilisation.

Visit of the great monasteries of Sera and Drepung, both of which were extensively destroyed in the Cultural Revolution but are now being rebuilt. Visit the Jokhang and of course the Potala Palace. Lhasa is at 3,600m/12,000ft and provides an ideal acclimation for the first few days.

Day 04: Drive to GYANTSE 3,950m. 5-6 hrs. O/N Hotel.
From Lhasa the drive leads towards near Gongar Airport, just after the bridge over the Yarlung Tsangpa River (Bhramaputra River) our route leads south east branching off from the Gongar, and Tsedang highway. The drive slowly climbs to Khamba-la at 4,800m. From the top great views of the surrounding landscapes and the snow capped peaks and as well of the beautiful Yamdrok Tsho (Turquoise Lake) down below, the drive continues by the Yamdrok Tsho passing through the town of Ngartse and then climbing to the top at Karo-la 5,050m pass. On reaching the top of the pass it can be cold being in the gorge between the massif snow capped peaks, amazing views of the glacier and ice fall of Mt.Nzongkhangsa.7,206 m. Time for short break or for possible lunch break at this lovely sight, at this place Drok-pa or the nomads dwells, but at present they have made a permanent house and tents on the nice grassy meadow herding yaks and sheep's and selling some semi precious crude stones and quartz to the tourist. From here it is almost downhill ride passing the village of Ralung. Then continue for another 3 hours drive towards the City of Gyantse.

Another important town, almost a city which was until recently the third largest settlement in Tibet. At Gyantse visit the Kumbum stupa. This was built in the early 15th century and contains thousands of frescoes. At Gyantse we will take the comfort of the Hotels, the hotel in Gyantse is a step down from the hotel in Lhasa but still not too bad by Tibetan standards, in Gyantse with time to visit the Kumbum monastery and its market. (Time permitting otherwise this tour can be done in the early morning before leaving for Shigatse.)

Day 05: Drive to Shigatse 3,900m. 2-3 hrs ride.
Our journey continues towards Shigatse the second largest city in Tibet after Lhasa. Today's drive covers 95 k.m. The road has recently been improved from the bumpy and rutted portion. After leaving the Gyantse journey begins on the 15 k.m of long straight sections, with no hills to climb, just vanishing points. The road follows the Nyang Chu River passing through many scattered farm villages and fields and finally approaching towards Shigatse. In Shigatse visit the very large complex of Tashilumpo monastery. This is the traditional residence of the Panchen Lama and contains a 27m high gold plated Buddha known as Matria (the future Buddha). Afternoon visit the local market.

Driving through the town of Larze where the road to Mt.Kailash joins, after Larze the drive climbs to the highest pass at Gyamshola Pass, 5,220m. After the pass reaching the New Tingri or Shegar, The main old Shegar town is further south from the main friendship highway, but most of the Hotel and inns are located on the main highway. New Tingri is also the gateway to Everest Base Camp and to Kharte (Makalu region).

From Shegar drive leads off the Nepal / China Friendship highway, on leaving the city suburb the ride passes through farm lands, villages and small town after 3 hours of good drive coming to the junction that leads towards the off trail to Rongbuk Monastery after 3-4 hours of drive reaching at Rongbuk Monastery for the overnight. From here the view of Everest North Face is really mind blowing. Depending upon the time, one can reach Everest Base Camp on a horse cart within half an hour, as the motor car is not allowed within this limit, except for very elderly people and kids.

Day 08: Visit Rongbuk Monastery & Everest Base Camp 5,200m.
Rongbuk Gompa and its many hermitage retreats were introduced to the world in the 1920's through the account of the 1st British expedition's teams of George and Irving Mallaory and from the well-known novel Lost Horizon by James Hilton. At present most of the retreat cells are abandoned and only few small monasteries scattered at this end of the valley is in function. According to the Rimpoche of this area, the monastery was first established as a religious site around 250 to 350 years ago.

Today an option for a short walk of less than 2-3 hours or one can ride on horse cart and motorbike as taxi, from here pass the main road for short while taking the east high path passing through number of isolated and ruin monuments, then descending to the main road after 30 minutes walks to a fresh running stream(the local pilgrims considers as a holy water), after being on the main track the road continues on this easy wide trail coming to the ruins of Sherab Chholing, just above the road from the Stupa with piles of prayers stones we will have time for a short visit to these old hermitage caves enroute our destination at Everest Base Camp. After a visit to the hermit cave, walks continues for another hour and half on the gravel, rocky track with the last climb over the rocky dunes for 20 minutes, after the climb coming towards Everest Base Camp, at Base Camp one can see a old guest-house built by the Chinese Government perched on top of the moraine hill near the bunch of prayer flags with majestic views of Mt. Everest behind.

Day 09: Drive to Zhangmu.
After a great time at Rongbuk with a visit to the Everest Base Camp, drive continues to join the main highway at Old Tingri, from this wind blown town the road is good and well maintained another four hours drives brings you back to the tree line and lush vegetation after leaving the high Tibetan plateau behind at the last town of Nylam. Before reaching Nylam, panoramic views of Shisapangma, Dorji Lakpa, Gauri Shanker and Langtang mountain range can be seen on a clear day. On reaching Zhangmu check into the Hotel. Zhangmu at 2,100m is a hill town with a mixture of Chinese, Nepali and Tibetan people.
